World Cup 2018
This was a particularly enjoyable project to work on, as it offered a high degree of creative freedom while still presenting a unique set of challenges. The primary constraint was compliance with FIFA’s World Cup branding regulations, which prohibited the use of any official tournament identity, assets, or visual elements. The final design solution can be seen below.
The design process began with extensive research into Russia as the host nation for the 2018 World Cup. Rather than relying on familiar visual clichés, I wanted to explore a more contemporary interpretation of Russian culture and identity. This involved studying modern Russian design influences, architecture, colour palettes, and national symbolism to develop an aesthetic that felt authentic, current, and relevant.
With football’s biggest tournament bringing together supporters from every corner of the world, the objective was to create a design that celebrated both the spirit of the competition and the pride of the host nation. The final concept combines a modern Russian-inspired visual language with the passion, energy, and sense of unity that define the FIFA World Cup.

The imagery shown below formed the foundation of the final composition and was combined, retouched, and composited in Adobe Photoshop to create a single cohesive visual.
As part of the art direction, I wanted to introduce a subtle sense of texture and authenticity inspired by the character of traditional Russian poster design. To achieve this, I incorporated a light grain treatment across the artwork and slightly desaturated the colour palette to create a more atmospheric and cinematic feel.
Careful adjustments were also made to highlights, shadows, and tonal balance throughout the composition. This not only enhanced the overall mood of the piece but also ensured that key interface elements and branding could be overlaid clearly without compromising the visual impact of the artwork.
